Private International Law in the European Union
17 April 2025, 10:20
An educational webinar was recently held as part of the ongoing cooperation between the Research Service of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine and the Institute of Legal Studies (Budapest, Hungary). The session focused on Private International Law (PIL) in the European Union – a key area in the legal harmonization process for EU candidate countries.
The webinar was delivered by Dr. Gábor Hajdu, Junior Research Fellow at the HUN-REN Centre for Social Sciences, Institute of Legal Studies, and Senior Lecturer at the Faculty of Law and Political Science, University of Szeged (Hungary).
Participants received a comprehensive overview of the EU’s private international law framework, including:
-conflict-of-law rules and principles for determining applicable law;
-jurisdiction of courts in cross-border civil matters;
-recognition and enforcement of foreign judgments;
-key sources of EU PIL, including major regulations such as Rome I, II, III and Brussels I, II.
Particular attention was paid to practical challenges in applying EU private international law – notably the need to adapt judicial practices, update legal education, and align national legislation with EU legal standards.
The webinar made a significant contribution to deepening understanding of the European Union’s legal system and the pathways for aligning Ukrainian legislation on the country’s path to EU membership.
Simultaneous interpretation was provided with the support of the “Ukraine2EU – EU Integration Support Programme for Ukraine”, ensuring the event was accessible to a broader audience.
