Educational Webinar “Judicial Independence: Key Criteria and Trust in the Judiciary”

On 25 March 2026, an educational webinar entitled “Judicial Independence: Key Criteria and Trust in the Judiciary” took place. The event was organized by the Research Service of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine in cooperation with the EU Project “Pravo-Justice”.
The webinar was delivered by Dr Virgilijus Valancius, senior international expert of the EU Project Pravo-Justice, Judge of the Court of Justice of the European Union (2016–2023).
During the webinar, the key elements of judicial independence were examined, including the institutional, financial, and individual independence of judges, as well as their relationship with the level of public trust in the judiciary.
In addition, the webinar highlighted the role of effective communication between courts and society as an important tool for strengthening the legitimacy of the justice system and preventing the misinterpretation of judicial decisions. Particular attention was also paid to international standards for ensuring judicial independence, including the case law of the Court of Justice of the European Union and the European Court of Human Rights, as well as recommendations of the Council of Europe and other international organisations.
