18 May 2026, 09:30
On 22 May 2026, the international round-table discussion “The Environmental Impact of the War on the Black Sea” will take place in Athens (Hellenic Republic) in a hybrid format. The event is organised by the International Centre for Black Sea Studies (ICBSS) in cooperation with the Research Service of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine and will run from 10:00 to 12:00.
The round table will bring together experts, academics, and policymakers to discuss the environmental consequences of Russia’s full-scale war against Ukraine for the Black Sea region, as well as to explore common approaches to addressing environmental challenges and strengthening international cooperation in the field of environmental recovery.
Discussions will focus on the direct and indirect impact of the war on Black Sea ecosystems, scientific approaches to assessing the damage caused, possible mechanisms for mitigating environmental consequences, and the prospects for the region’s ecological recovery.
The event aims to raise awareness of the environmental impact of military activities, promote science-based approaches to environmental policymaking, and strengthen cooperation among Black Sea countries and international partners.
