On 20 April 2026, an educational webinar entitled The Role of Judicial and Prosecutorial Self- Governance in Ensuring Fair Administration of Justice took place. The event was organized by the Research Service of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine in cooperation with the EU Project “Pravo-Justice”.

In his welcoming remarks, Serhii YURIEV, Deputy Head of the Secretariat of the Committee on Legal Policy of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine, emphasized the key role of judicial and prosecutorial self-governance bodies in safeguarding judicial independence, strengthening public trust in the justice system, and ensuring Ukraine’s fulfilment of its obligations within the EU accession process, particularly under Chapter 23 “Judiciary and Fundamental Rights.”

Maja CVITAN GRUBISIN, Component Lead for “Support to EU Integration Process in the Justice Sectorof the EU Project “Pravo-Justice,  highlighted the importance of sustained support for reforms, enhanced institutional capacity, and the implementation of European standards as essential conditions for Ukraine’s continued progress towards EU membership.

The webinar was delivered by Pim ALBERS, global rule of law and judicial reform expert, short-term expert of the EU Project Pravo-Justice.

During the webinar, key aspects of the functioning of judicial and prosecutorial self-governance bodies were examined, including institutional independence, the procedures for appointing and dismissing their members, the level of financial autonomy, staffing capacity, overall performance, as well as issues of accountability, transparency, and integrity. Particular attention was devoted to the comparative analysis of European standards and practices, as well as their application in Ukraine.
