On 5 May 2025, another webinar was held within the framework of cooperation between the Research Service of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine and the Robert Schuman Institute (Budapest, Hungary). This time, the topic of discussion was EU legislation in the field of intellectual property.
The speaker was Dr. Uroš Ćemalović, Ph.D., Doctor of the University of Strasbourg and an expert in intellectual property and environmental law.
During the webinar, the following issues were addressed:
- the importance of harmonising legislation on intellectual property for candidate countries;
- key EU legal acts, such as Directive 2001/29/EC, the EU Trade Mark Regulation, and the Regulation on Unitary Patent Protection;
- the role of the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO);
- best practices and common challenges related to the implementation of EU acts, including the experience of Serbia.
Special attention was given to the challenges of legislative approximation, the effectiveness of parliamentary oversight, and the involvement of stakeholders at all stages of the legislative process.
The lively discussion following the presentation highlighted the participants’ strong interest in the topic. It covered practical aspects of implementing EU law, particularly in the areas of copyright protection, trademarks, patents, and ensuring judicial protection of intellectual property rights.
The Research Service of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine extends its sincere gratitude to Dr. Uroš Ćemalović for his insightful and engaging lecture, and to the Director of the Robert Schuman Institute, Mr. Gábor Berczeli, for his support in organising the event.
Simultaneous interpretation for the webinar was provided thanks to “Ukraine2EU – EU Integration Support Programme for Ukraine”, which made the event accessible to a wider audience.
